Bodhisattvas of initial practice see the intermediate function; because of their deep faith in tathatā, they attain a partial vision, knowing that the Tathāgata's body has no coming and no going, no interruption, and is merely a shadow-image appearing from the mind, not apart from tathatā; yet these bodhisattvas are not yet able to leave subtle discrimination, because they have not entered the stage of the Dharmakāya. Bodhisattvas of pure mind see the subtle function, which progressively increases in excellence like this, up to the ultimate stage of bodhisattvas where it is seen completely. This subtle function is the enjoyment body; because they have karmic consciousness, they see the enjoyment body; if they were free from karmic consciousness, there would be nothing to be seen.
