> Next, the intent of taking refuge is distinguished. In taking refuge in distinct characteristics, what is aimed at is threefold: First, one takes refuge for the sake of renouncing: for the sake of renouncing the evils and unwholesome things of saṃsāra. Thus the Nirvāṇa \[Sūtra\] states, "All sentient beings fear saṃsāra like an evil hunter, and therefore seek the three refuges." The Śrīmālādevī also states, "Śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, out of fear, rely upon the Tathāgata." Second, one takes refuge for the sake of attaining: for the sake of attaining pleasant retributions and wholesome dharmas. Third, one takes refuge for the sake of benefiting: for the sake of benefiting sentient beings in reliance on the Three Jewels. In taking refuge in one's own virtues, what is aimed at is also threefold: First, one takes refuge for the sake of renouncing: for the sake of renouncing the evils and unwholesome things of saṃsāra. Second, one takes refuge for the sake of attaining: for the sake of attaining the supramundane path to nirvāṇa. Third, one takes refuge for the sake of benefiting: for the sake of seeking future fruition to benefit sentient beings. In taking refuge in one's own reality, what is aimed at is also threefold: First, one takes refuge for the sake of renouncing: for the sake of renouncing false conceptualization and deceptive dharmas. Second, one takes refuge for the sake of attaining: for the sake of realizing the truly real dharma of one's own nature. Third, one takes refuge for the sake of benefiting: for the sake of realizing one's own reality to transform sentient beings. The meaning of the three refuges, its drift is roughly such.
