- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [10.15](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1851.10.15)

> First is explaining the names. As for the three trainings: first is the training in higher morality; second is the training in higher concentration, also called \[the training in\] higher mind, also called \[the training in\] higher thought; third is the training in higher wisdom. Guarding and prohibiting is called morality; clarity and stillness is called concentration, and because concentration calms the mind internally, it is also called mind, and also called thought; discerning contemplation is called wisdom. Practicing and habituating oneself within these three is called training, and progress in training is called "higher." Such are the names and meanings. Question: Herein, what is the essence of training? Explanation: That which can train has mind as its essence. If one discusses that which is trained in, it takes the three practices of morality, concentration, and wisdom as its essence. Question: Are the three trainings confined only to the cause, or do they also extend to the fruit? Explanation: The training mind is confined solely to the cause; when the virtues of fruition are fully perfected, the training mind ceases, which is why the scriptures describe it as beyond training (aśaikṣa). If one discusses that which is trained in, it extends to both cause and fruit. Question: In the fruition it is called "beyond training"; how can training practice extend to the fruit? Explanation: Because the morality, concentration, wisdom, and so forth in the fruition are accomplished through training, they are also called training. (This one section is concluded.)
