> The five immeasurables are the wisdom that transforms others. What are their names? The first is the immeasurable sentient-being realm; the second is the immeasurable world realm; the third is the immeasurable dharma realm; the fourth is the immeasurable taming realm; the fifth is the immeasurable skillful-means-of-taming realm. Skillfully knowing the differences among the sentient beings to be transformed is called 'immeasurable sentient beings'. Skillfully knowing the differences among the dwelling places of sentient beings is called 'immeasurable worlds'. Knowing the dharmas, such as wholesome and unwholesome, that arise from the minds and mental factors of all sentient beings, and utilizing them to teach and transform, is called 'immeasurable dharma realm'. Knowing the differences in the faculties and natures of all sentient beings is called 'immeasurable taming'. Yet this does not merely mean knowing the tamed mind; it also means knowing the untamed; because taming is primary, it is spoke of in this one-sided manner. Knowing the dharmas for crossing over sentient beings is called 'skillful means of taming'. In the dharmas for crossing over sentient beings, skill in cultivation is called 'skillful means'. Using this to impart to people and tame them so as to induce them to give rise to practice is called 'skillful means of taming'. Furthermore, causing others to give rise to skill in practice is also called 'skillful means'. Question: Just as those four immeasurable minds are called 'immeasurable', now these five kinds are also called 'immeasurable'; does the term 'immeasurable' apply to the objective sphere, or is it stated with respect to the mind? Explanation: It is not biased toward one. Setting aside the mind and discussing the objective sphere, the four spheres and the five spheres are both immeasurable. Viewing the mind in terms of the objective sphere, the four immeasurable minds and the five immeasurable wisdoms are all immeasurable. Such are their names and meanings (this concludes the first gate).
