> In the second gate, its essential nature is analyzed. Therein, discussing its nature with reference to form, mind, and other dharmas, advancing or receding according to the meaning, there are briefly five kinds: First, with reference to the root: all six pāramitās take mental dharmas as their substance; apart from the mind, there are no other virtuous practices. Second, discussing on the basis of the skillful means of gathering and cultivating: all six pāramitās take form and mind as their substance. For example, in giving, relinquishing wealth with body and speech is its nature of form, while the volition and wish to relinquish wealth is the intrinsic nature of the mind; in the second, moral discipline, the body and speech being free from fault is its nature of form, while inner purity of mind is the intrinsic nature of the mind; in forbearance, body, speech, and mind not reviling and not retaliating is the intrinsic nature of form, while the inner mind enduring patiently is the intrinsic nature of the mind; with respect to vigor, bodily and verbal engagement in practice is its nature of form, while the inner mind's exertion and diligence is the intrinsic nature of the mind; with respect to meditation, bodily and verbal calmness and stillness is its nature of form, while the inner mind being undistracted is the intrinsic nature of the mind; with respect to wisdom, seeking the Dharma with body and speech is its nature of form, while the inner mind illuminating clearly is the intrinsic nature of the mind. Third, discussing the substance of practice with reference to the object: the former four are cultivated in accordance with phenomenal affairs, encompassing both form and mind; the latter two are practices that realize the Dharma, confined solely to the mind, because abiding in the object and seeing the Dharma can only be done by the mind. Fourth, distinguishing them with respect to the aspects of practice: the former three are the power to transform sentient beings, and transformation relies upon the three karmas, encompassing both form and mind; the latter three are the power to guard against afflictions, confined solely to the mind, because subduing delusions and severing fetters can only be done by the mind. These two powers will be distinguished further below. Fifth, distinguishing them with reference to the nature of karma: giving and holding precepts have the intrinsic nature of the three karmas, encompassing both form and mind—in giving, volition and wish are its mental karma, while giving wealth with body and speech is bodily and verbal karma; in moral discipline, purity of mind is its mental karma, while purity of body and speech is bodily and verbal karma, and thus these two encompass both form and mind; the latter four are mental dharmas with the intrinsic nature of mental karma, confined solely to the mind. The essential nature is as such.
