> In the fifth section, the distinct characteristics of the various practices are briefly differentiated individually. There are four distinct kinds: 1. differences in the cultivating mind; 2. differences in the characteristics of practice; 3. differences in counteracting hindrances; 4. differences in obtaining retribution. Regarding the differences in the cultivating mind, as spoken in the seven-fascicle Suvarṇaprabhāsa, each is cultivated with five minds respectively. First, relying on five dharmas accomplishes the pāramitā of giving: 1. possessing the faculty of faith; 2. giving rise to benevolence and compassion; 3. having no other pursuit in mind; 4. gathering sentient beings through giving and the like; 5. seeking all-knowledge. Next, there are five dharmas that accomplish the pāramitā of morality: 1. purifying the three karmas; 2. not acting as the cause or condition of afflictions for sentient beings; 3. severing evil destinies and opening all gates of goodness; 4. surpassing the stages of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas; 5. wishing for all merits to be completely fulfilled. Next, there are five dharmas that accomplish forbearance: 1. subduing greed and anger; 2. not sparing body or life; 3. contemplating past karma to illuminate oneself; 4. generating a mind of benevolence and compassion to accomplish the wholesome roots of sentient beings; 5. attaining the profound forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas (anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti). Next, there are five dharmas that accomplish vigor: 1. not dwelling together with afflictions; 2. not finding peace before merit is complete; 3. not generating weariness toward all difficult practices; 4. accomplishing great benevolence to benefit sentient beings; 5. vowing for the non-retrogressing stage. Next, there are five practices that accomplish dhyāna: 1. gathering and holding wholesome dharmas without distraction; 2. attaining liberation from birth and death; 3. vowing to attain spiritual powers to accomplish sentient beings; 4. washing the dharmadhātu with a mind of benevolence to purify the mind; 5. severing all afflictions of sentient beings. Next, there are five dharmas that accomplish prajñā: 1. never tiring of making offerings to buddhas and bodhisattvas in order to seek the Dharma; 2. never tiring of joyfully hearing the profound Dharma; 3. accomplishing superior wisdom; 4. being able to sever afflictions; 5. thoroughly mastering the five sciences. (This concludes the first approach.)
