> The meaning of the ten noble abodes is as explained in the Tattvasiddhi. The places where noble ones are produced are called noble abodes; moreover, the bases of reliance for noble ones are also called noble abodes. The noble abodes are differentiated, and within one doctrinal approach ten are taught. What are the ten names? 1. Abandoning five dharmas, 2. Accomplishing six dharmas, 3. Guarding one dharma, 4. Relying on four dharmas, 5. Relinquishing false truths, 6. Relinquishing all seekings, 7. Unpolluted thinking, 8. Detaching from bodily activities, 9. Well-attaining mental liberation, and 10. Well-attaining liberation through wisdom. 'Abandoning five dharmas' means abandoning the five higher fetters to attain arhatship; the meaning of the five higher fetters has been extensively explained before. 'Accomplishing six dharmas' means accomplishing the six wonderful practices, extensively explained as before. 'Guarding one dharma' means binding mindfulness to contemplate the body as impermanent, suffering, and so on. 'Relying on four dharmas' means relying on the four noble lineages: begging for food for one's whole life, up to taking discarded medicine when sick. 'Relinquishing false truths' means being able to penetrate the true mark, cutting off all views, and realizing the first fruit. 'Relinquishing all seekings': as that treatise explains, "There are three kinds of seeking: first, seeking for desires, which is seeking dharmas of the desire realm; second, seeking for existence, which is seeking the upper two realms; third, seeking for the holy life (brahmacarya), which is seeking the path of learning. Abandoning these three seekings, one attains the fruit of non-learning; this is called relinquishing all seekings." 'Unpolluted thinking' means extinguishing the defilements of the path of cultivation in the desire realm, attaining the first three fruits. 'Detaching from bodily activities' means eliminating the fetters of the desire realm and obtaining the four dhyānas. 'Mental liberation' refers to attaining the knowledge of exhaustion (kṣaya-jñāna). 'Liberation through wisdom' refers to attaining the knowledge of non-arising (anutpāda-jñāna). Among the ten, the first two proceed from anāgāmin to attain arhatship; the next four noble abodes proceed in gradual advancement from an external worldling to attain arhatship; the latter four noble abodes proceed from the fruit of srotāpanna to ultimately attain arhatship. The meaning of the ten noble abodes is briefly stated thus.
