- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [14.33](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1851.14.33)

> Next is explaining the meaning of the sequence of causal arising. As the Bodhisattvabhūmi states, upon hearing the bodhisattva treasury, one has faith that there is bodhi, so faith is explained first. Because of faith in bodhi, one reflects that sentient beings are in the suffering of saṃsāra and cannot attain that Dharma, so one gives rise to a compassionate mind. Because of compassion for sentient beings, one desires to deliver them, so one gives rise to a mind of loving-kindness. On account of compassion and loving-kindness, one cultivates generous giving, so renunciation is explained next. For the sake of giving the Dharma, one cultivates the correct meaning without weariness or indolence, so untiring vigor comes next. Because of untiring vigor, one is able to know the sacred teachings, so knowledge of the treatises comes next. Because of knowing the sūtras and treatises, one skilfully understands what is timely and appropriate, so one knows the world. Because of knowing the world, dwelling long in the world, one is prone to giving rise to grave transgressions, so one gives rise to shame and conscience. Because of shame and conscience, one does not follow afflictions and attains vigorous power. Because of vigorous power, one is able to cultivate wholesome dharmas and obtain much wealth and benefit, making offerings to the Tathāgata. The sequence is as such (this completes the fourth gate).
