### [17.54](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1851.17.54)

> Next, the three stages are distinguished according to karma. Karma has two kinds: tainted and untainted. The causes of fragmented \[samsāric\] lifespan are called tainted; the causes of transformation are called untainted. Among tainted karma there is wholesome and unwholesome: causes of humans and devas are called wholesome; causes of the three bad destinies are expounded as unwholesome. The unwholesome has five tiers: first is the icchantika, giving rise to great wrong views and the karma of severing the roots of goodness; second is slandering the true Dharma; third is the five heinous sins; fourth is committing the grave prohibitions; fifth is the ten unwholesome deeds. If including all transgressions against comportment, the unwholesome has six tiers. The characteristics of karma are like this. Now, the three stages are distinguished according to four karmas, within which regarding advance and retreat there are roughly two meanings \[and three distinctions\]: First, the three stages are distinguished exclusively in contrast to unwholesome karma. In the stage of good destinies, one cultivates pure faith, leaving behind icchantika karma. From the lineage upward, understanding and practice are established, permanently leaving behind the three kinds of unwholesome karma: slandering the Dharma, the four grave \[offenses\], and the five heinous sins. From the first ground upward, virtuous practice is purely wholesome, leaving behind the karma of the ten unwholesome deeds, and even leaving behind all evils of comportment. Second, they are distinguished in general contrast to both wholesome and unwholesome \[karma\]. The two karmas of wholesome and unwholesome have bound and unbound forms. In the good destinies one cultivates bodily discipline, mind, and wisdom, transforming the heavy to make it light, and severing and leaving behind karma definitively bound to the three bad destinies. From the lineage upward, the power of compassionate vows is accomplished and coming and going is sovereign, severing and leaving behind karma definitively bound to humans and devas. From the first ground upward, virtuous practice is pure, permanently leaving behind karma non-definitively bound to humans and devas; it may also be severed from the eighth ground upward. Third, they are distinguished in general contrast to tainted and untainted karma. In the good destinies one cultivates bodily discipline, mind, and wisdom, severing karma of the three bad destinies. From the lineage upward, one cultivates the untainted path, gradually severing the fragmented karma of humans and devas. From the first ground upward, true virtues gradually appear, severing transformation karma. The discussion according to karma is like this. (Here ends the seventh gate.)
