> Next, the meaning of presence and absence across the three realms is analyzed. In the Hīnayāna teaching, the four formless absorptions of empty space, the attainment of cessation (nirodha-samāpatti), and nirvāṇa are consistently without mind. Regarding the absorption without ideation (asaṃjñi-samāpatti) and retribution without ideation, the two treatises differ: the Abhidharma holds that they are without mind, while the Tattvasiddhi holds that they have mind. Hence that treatise says: 'Ordinary beings are unable to extinguish the mind and mental factors; it is merely that gross mind is absent, so it is said to be without ideation.' In the Mahāyāna teaching, the four formless absorptions have form. Hence the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra says: 'Like the Heaven of Neither Ideation nor Non-Ideation, which is both form and non-form, yet I speak of it as non-form.' Since Neither Ideation has it, the lower three categories are likewise. Furthermore, in the Mahāyāna, it is taught that from the absorption without ideation up to the Hīnayāna nirvāṇa without remainder, all possess mind; although the six consciousnesses have ceased, the mind of the seventh consciousness remains, and so it is said to possess mind. Because they possess mind, the four aggregates of feeling, ideation, formations, and consciousness are not absent. The meaning of the five aggregates is thus roughly analyzed.
