> Next, it is discussed in terms of stages. Universally discussing these three generations of the mind according to their meaning, they encompass from beginning to end; when divided according to stages, there is indeed a hierarchy. Essential stages are three, which when expanded broadly become six. Regarding the three essential ones, as stated in Aśvaghoṣa's treatise: first, generation of the mind through faith, the stage being in the lineage; this is the aforementioned generation with marks. Second, generation of the mind through understanding, the stage being in understanding and practice; this is the aforementioned generation by pacifying marks. Third, generation through realization, the stage being on the bhūmis; this is still the aforementioned true generation. Regarding the broad six, beginning from external worldlings and ending at the Dharma Cloud \[bhūmi\], they are subsumed into six: first, external worldlings pursuing in accordance with conceptualization is called generation through conceptualization. Second, in the stage of the ten faiths, true faith is already accomplished; aspiring and according through faith is called generation through faith. Third, in the stage of the acquired lineage, true understanding is accomplished; aspiring and according through understanding is called generation through understanding. Fourth, in the stage of the nature lineage, true practice is accomplished; directing oneself through practice is called generation through practice. Fifth, in the stage of understanding and practice, because the path of contemplation is established, the contemplative mind aspires and accords, which is called generation through contemplation, and also called generation through the path. Sixth, from the initial bhūmi upward, the practice of realization is accomplished; the mind of realization aspires and accords, which is called generation through realization. The meaning of generating the mind is thus summarized.
