> The sweet medicine has remained on the mountain for a very long time; the round pearl has lain submerged in the water indeed for many an age. Yet following the places to which it flows, the six tastes differ; contending over grasping tiles and stones, the three vehicles become disparate. Mistakenly speaking of a knife of ram's horn, or relying again on an elephant that resembles a rope, I venture to receive the Buddha's intention and lightly set forth modest words, hoping that as a reflection appears in a mirror, the face will find its proper place again. Losing one's native land when young is called childhood exile; not knowing how to return to the root is called ignorance; sweeping away consciousness and returning to the source is designated buddha-nature.
