> Question: How does one name have immeasurable meanings? Explanation: It is explained in terms of four meanings: first, explaining according to the name; second, explaining with reference to causes and conditions; third, explaining by revealing the Way; fourth, explaining without fixed direction. Explaining according to the name: as conventional taking insubstantiality as its meaning, and conventional also taking custom as its meaning. This \[second meaning\] is fully found in both internal and external \[teachings\]; therefore, the Vinaya has country-vinaya: according to the place and country, customs differ. The Book of Rites says: "The gentleman conducts rites without seeking to change customs." Therefore, custom is its meaning. Heretofore, only the former explanation was grasped, and the latter understanding was absent.
