> The Nameless said: That the asaṃskṛta is non-dual is indeed so. But to claim that the fetters, which are grave delusions, can be exhausted suddenly—this also is not understood. A sūtra says: 'Three arrows hit the target; three beasts cross the river.' Hitting and crossing are without difference, yet there is the distinction of shallow and deep because their strengths are not the same. Sentient beings of the triyāna all cross the ford of dependent origination and equally perceive the target of the Four Noble Truths, severing the false and reaching the true, equally ascending to the asaṃskṛta. Thus, that what they ride is not one is also because their power of wisdom is not the same. Now, although the various existences are manifold, their measure has limits. Even if one had wisdom like Śāriputra and eloquence like Pūrṇa, exhausting talent and stretching thought, neither could glimpse its boundary. How much less, in the realm of the empty and non-existent and the sphere of the twofold mystery, where the Way is boundless, could one wish to exhaust it suddenly? Does the classic not say: 'In the pursuit of learning, one increases daily; in the pursuit of the Way, one decreases daily'? He who pursues the Way is he who acts for the asaṃskṛta. To act for the asaṃskṛta and yet speak of daily decrease—how could this mean attaining it suddenly? One must decrease it and decrease it again, until one reaches non-decrease. The sūtra gives the analogy of the firefly and the sun; the function of their wisdom can be known from this!
