> \[This chapter\] examines and appraises the person who attains nirvāṇa; hence it is called thus. Where the Named says, 'The scriptures say that the nature of sentient beings is exhausted within the five aggregates,' and so forth: This generally explains the overall intention of the various scriptures. 'In that case, the nature of sentient beings is entirely exhausted within the five aggregates' means that when the five aggregates are exhausted, sentient beings are exhausted. It also means that sentient beings are confined within the five aggregates, and so they are called 'exhausted'. 'The Path of nirvāṇa is established uniquely outside the three realms of existence' means that nirvāṇa transcends the worldly; hence nirvāṇa is established outside the three realms. Where it says, 'Vastly different realms,' and so forth: One is inside and the other is outside, hence they are called 'different realms'. Since they are called different realms, one cannot say that sentient beings attain nirvāṇa. Where it says, 'If there really is attainment,' and so forth: If one definitely says that sentient beings attain nirvāṇa, then there would be sentient beings outside the five aggregates of whom attainment is predicated. Where it says, 'If they are necessarily confined to the five aggregates,' and so forth: If sentient beings are confined within the five aggregates, and yet one again speaks of attaining nirvāṇa, then the five aggregates are not definitely non-existent. Where it says, 'If the five aggregates are entirely exhausted,' and so forth: If the five aggregates are exhausted, then there is no person who attains nirvāṇa. This is the general gist of concluding the objection.
