> About to clarify the principle that mutation is itself immutability, he first sets forth the ordinary sentiments of those who are confused and invert immutability into mutation, so as to cause them to forget sentiments and awaken to reality. The first line presents the dharmas that undergo change, extending to all dharmas, where birth comes and death declines. Death arriving and birth perishing, arising and ceasing are mutually dependent; hence it is called "alternating." The next line presents the time that effects change, extending to all times, where alternating shifts are evident. "Existing" means conditioned existence; "in flux" means mutating. In the last line, the meaning encompasses ordinary people and non-Buddhists, and also directly addresses provisional and small vehicles, contrasting the three by means of the one. Those who only see impermanence and do not see identity with the permanent are all of ordinary sentiments and shallow views.
