> From "Your letter states" to "always been confused" is the quotation of Liu Yimin's earlier words summarizing the treatise's purport. The three sentences from "Cherishing this" downward affirm that what he attained was without error. From "how could it be necessary" downward, he rebukes him for his confusion in seeking differences in the mind once more. The general sense is: since you already know that the sage mind is dark and quiescent, and that being and non-being are consistent, you can naturally forget the different names of expedient and real externally, and internally attain the non-difference of the sage mind, with your mind deeply sealed and settled, no longer seeking differences. Why then rely once more on the discriminating mind of human sentiment to seek two separate differences—expedient and real—in the sage mind?
