> Sixth, regarding the comparative discrimination of the various minds: The spontaneous mind of the eye consciousness, for instance, can also occur concurrently with the spontaneous mind of other consciousnesses, and so forth up to commensurate flow likewise, because the Yogācārabhūmi and other texts state that the eight consciousnesses can arise together at one time. It also occurs that the spontaneous mind of the eye consciousness can be concurrent with the four \[minds\], beginning with seeking, of the ear consciousness; the seeking mind of the eye consciousness can be concurrent with the three \[minds\], beginning with determining, of the ear consciousness, or with the two \[minds\], beginning with defilement and purity, and so forth up to being concurrent with the single mind of commensurate flow. It also occurs that the spontaneous mind of the eye consciousness, the seeking mind of the ear consciousness, the determining mind of the nose consciousness, the defiled or pure mind of the tongue consciousness, and the commensurate flow mind of the body consciousness arise concurrently in a single thought-moment, for there is no rational objection to this. As with the arising of the eye consciousness, up to the body consciousness and so forth, they can be known by analogy in this way. Some say this is not possible; since this is not the orthodox position, it is not expounded.
