> Second, explaining the names: first listing them, then explaining them. Listing them: 1. wisdom arisen from listening; 2. wisdom arisen from reflection; 3. wisdom arisen from cultivation. Explaining the names: first explaining the general name, then explaining the specific names. Explaining the general name: 'wisdom' has the sense of discerning; 'three' is a number; this is an analysis \[of a compound\] incorporating a number (digu-samāsa). 'Listening' refers to the capacity to hear, which is the ear consciousness being able to hear sound. 'Arisen' (accomplished) has the meaning of growth and completion. The essence of 'wisdom' is as \[explained\] before. With listening as the cause, the wisdom accomplished through the cause of listening is called 'wisdom arisen from listening'; this is a tatpuruṣa compound. 'Reflection' refers to the mental factor of reflection (cetanā); superior wisdom arises only through the weighing and calculating of reflection. The wisdom accomplished through associated reflection is called 'wisdom arisen from reflection'; this is an upacāra based on proximity. Or, the wisdom accomplished through reflection is a tatpuruṣa compound. 'Cultivation' has the sense of realization, because it clearly realizes the objective realm. Its essence is the mental factor of concentration (samādhi); the wisdom accomplished through association with concentration is an upacāra based on proximity. Or, the wisdom accomplished through concentration is also a tatpuruṣa compound. If one were merely to say 'listening-wisdom', 'reflection-wisdom', and 'cultivation-wisdom', this would be confused with a karmadhāraya compound and lack the senses of proximity and the like; by stating 'arisen from that' (śrutamayi, etc.), there is no such error.
