> The Yogācārabhūmi, fascicle forty-five, has the five great vows and the ten great vows. The five vows are: first, the vow of arousing the mind; second, the vow of taking rebirth; third, the vow of conduct; fourth, the vow of rectitude; fifth, the great vow. If bodhisattvas initially arouse their minds toward unexcelled, perfect bodhi, this is called the vow of arousing the mind. If bodhisattvas vow that in future lives they will be reborn in wholesome destinies in accordance with benefiting sentient beings, this is called the vow of taking rebirth. If bodhisattvas vow to be able to unerringly discern all dharmas, and vow to cultivate immeasurable and other surpassing wholesome dharmas with respect to objects, this is called the vow of conduct. If bodhisattvas vow that in the future they will gather all wholesome dharmas of bodhisattvas and gather all qualities, this is called the vow of rectitude. One should know that the great vow of a bodhisattva arises precisely from the vow of rectitude. As for the ten great vows: if bodhisattvas vow that in the future they will make offerings to immeasurable and boundless Tathāgatas with supreme, wonderful articles of offering of all kinds, this is called the first vow. If bodhisattvas (this phrase extends down to the tenth) vow that in the future they will gather and protect the true Dharma of all Buddhas, transmit and uphold the Dharma eye, and keep it from interruption or destruction, this is called the second vow. Vowing that in the future they will descend from Tuṣita heaven, and as before, up to entering nirvāṇa, is called the third vow. Vowing that in the future they will practice the correct practices of bodhisattvas of all kinds is called the fourth vow. Vowing that in the future they will be able to universally mature all sentient beings is called the fifth vow. Vowing that in the future they will be able to manifest in all worlds is called the sixth vow. Vowing that in the future they will be able to universally purify all Buddha-lands is called the seventh vow. Vowing that in the future all bodhisattvas will share one identical intention and application, entering into the Mahāyāna, is called the eighth vow. Vowing that in the future all their unerring applications will not be in vain is called the ninth vow. Vowing that in the future they will swiftly realize unexcelled, perfect bodhi is called the tenth vow.
