> The nine gates of vīrya: First, intrinsic nature: that is, bodhisattvas possess a courageous mind, capable of gathering immeasurable wholesome dharmas to benefit and bring happiness to all sentient beings, blazing, uninterrupted, and non-erroneous, as well as the exertion of body, speech, and mind arising from this. This is called the intrinsic nature of vīrya. 'All' refers to three kinds each for both householders and renunciants: 1. armor-like \[vīrya\], 2. \[vīrya\] collecting wholesome \[dharmas\], and 3. \[vīrya\] benefiting \[sentient beings\]. Armor-like refers to bodhisattvas who, before arousing preparatory vīrya, have a courageous mind and first put on the armor of vows: 'Even if, to free all sentient beings from suffering, I must dwell in Naraka and no other rebirth for days and nights equal to a thousand great eons before attaining bodhi, and even if it requires a period of eons exceeding this by hundreds of thousands of koṭis of times before attaining bodhi, my courage will not retreat or bend.' In seeking bodhi, they never fail to advance, and having advanced, they exert themselves courageously without slackening; how much less so when the time experienced is short and the suffering slight! This is called armor-like vīrya. Vīrya collecting wholesome \[dharmas\] can perform the six preparations and accomplish the six pāramitās. This also has seven kinds: 1. immovable vīrya, because it is not shaken by any conceptual discrimination, primary or secondary afflictions, heterodox teachings, or painful contacts; 2. firm vīrya, because of earnest preparation; 3. immeasurable vīrya, because of directly realizing all realms of knowledge; 4. vīrya endowed with skillful means, because of thoroughly understanding the non-erroneous, compliant practice of the meaning that should be attained; 5. non-erroneous vīrya, because of being guided by the aspirational vow to realize the meaning; 6. constant vīrya, because of uninterrupted preparation; 7. vīrya free from conceit, because of being free from arrogance through encouraging vigor. Through this, one quickly realizes anuttarā samyaksambodhi and the supreme cause of all wholesome dharmas. What is vīrya that benefits sentient beings? This has eleven kinds, as explained in the chapter on śīla; that was śīla and this is vīrya, which constitutes their difference. Difficult-to-practice vīrya: briefly, there are three kinds: 1. uninterruptedly distancing oneself from thoughts of clothing, food, lying down, and the body, and cultivating wholesome dharmas without interruption, slackening, or abandonment—this is called the first difficulty; 2. practicing such vīrya throughout the entirety of one's lifetime, at all times without ever slackening or abandoning—this is called the second difficulty; 3. equally comprehending and being endowed with virtues, neither too slow nor too rushed, non-erroneously inducing benefit—this is called the third difficulty.
