> All kinds of vīrya: there are six kinds and seven kinds, making thirteen kinds in total. The six kinds are: 1. uninterrupted vīrya, meaning practicing application at all times; 2. earnest vīrya, meaning practicing application thoroughly; 3. concordant vīrya, meaning being sustained by the power of prior causes; 4. preparatory vīrya, meaning repeatedly deliberating on application toward wholesome factors; 5. immovable vīrya, because no painful touch can shake it; 6. insatiable vīrya, because of not being satisfied with slight or inferior realizations—these are the five beginning with 'vigorous' as spoken in the sūtras. What are the seven kinds? 1. vīrya conjoined with desire, because of repeatedly nurturing sharp desire and aspiration for bodhi; 2. vīrya endowed with equanimity, because the mind is untainted and unentangled by fundamental and secondary afflictions, and one is able to dwell practicing wholesome dharmas with equanimity; 3. excelling vīrya, where if fundamental or secondary afflictions defile or entangle the mind, one displays vigor as if putting out a fire on one's head; 4. striving vīrya, because of tirelessly striving for the realms of knowledge; 5. training vīrya, because of being able to accomplish the practice in accordance with the Dharma that one trains in; 6. other-benefiting vīrya, whose characteristics should be understood according to the eleven kinds spoken of earlier; 7. well-guarding vīrya, where all vīrya gives rise to correct preparation, guarding oneself well and repenting transgressions in accordance with the Dharma. Happiness in both lives should be understood as with forbearance.
