- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.8](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1864.1.8)

> Fifth, the ultimate stage: because one's work is accomplished and one's tasks are completed, it is designated 'ultimate'. This excludes \[the stage of\] provisioning and the others, because the work of those four stages is not yet completed. It also excludes the two vehicles, because the bodhi and nirvāṇa attained by the two vehicles are not lofty and supreme. Only the Buddha alone is capable \[of this\]: all that was to be done has been done, and his virtues are the most supreme; hence it receives the name 'ultimate'.
