> 1. According to Bodhiruci, relying on the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra and so forth, he established the one-voice teaching. This means that all sacred teachings are of one voice and one flavor, like a single rain raining down equally; yet because sentient beings differ in their faculties and practices, they understand differently according to their capacities, and so there come to be many kinds. If one investigates their origin, it is solely the Tathāgata's teaching of the single perfect voice. Hence the sūtra says: "The Buddha preaches the Dharma with a single voice, / Sentient beings each attain understanding according to their kind," and so forth.
