> 7. According to Dhyāna Master \[Huisi\] of Nanyue and Dhyāna Master Zhizhe \[Zhiyi\] of Tiantai, they established four kinds of teachings to comprehensively subsume the lifetime sacred teachings transmitted eastward: The first is named the Tripiṭaka teaching, meaning it is the Hīnayāna; they themselves cited the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra: "One must not associate with scholars of the Hīnayāna Tripiṭaka." Furthermore, the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states that the Hīnayāna is the Tripiṭaka teaching, and the Mahāyāna is the Mahāyāna Piṭaka. The second is named the shared teaching, meaning that in the various Mahāyāna sūtras, the preaching of the Dharma universally benefits persons of the Three Vehicles and so forth, as well as the ten stages such as the dry wisdom stage in the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā-sūtra, which are shared by the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna. The third is named the distinct teaching, meaning that the principles clarified in the various Mahāyāna sūtras do not extend to the Hīnayāna and so forth. The fourth is named the perfect teaching, which, for the sake of the sovereignty of the dharma-realm, is fully endowed with all inexhaustible doctrinal approaches, where one is all, all is one, and so forth; this refers to sūtras such as the Avataṃsaka.
