> Question: What are the differences among the methods of repentance in the various teachings?
>
> Answer: There are four gates here: first, repentance; second, entreaty; third, rejoicing in others' merits; fourth, dedication. This passage is in the Ekayāna, and is applied generally to the triyāna; it is explained at length as in the \*Vibhāṣā-śāstra\*. The Hīnayāna teachings and others do not fully possess this method. The methods for eradicating transgressions are fully set forth as in the sūtras and treatises. If considered under the gate of making vows, they all pervade principle and phenomena, cause and effect. There are both vows of accomplished deeds and vows of unaccomplished deeds, which may be understood by analogy.
