> According to the deluded-dharma Hīnayāna, the meaning of the baskets (piṭaka) is twofold: first, the three baskets, namely the sūtra-piṭaka—also called xiutuolu, also called sūtram; second, the abhidharma-piṭaka; third, the vinaya-piṭaka. Second is the two baskets, namely the śrāvaka-piṭaka and the pratyekabuddha-piṭaka. These names are the same as in the Triyāna, but their meaning is different. The essence of the Hīnayāna three baskets is subsumed under the truth of suffering (duḥkha-satya); the essence of the Triyāna three baskets is subsumed under the true nature (pariniṣpanna-svabhāva). These Triyāna baskets are of five kinds: first, one basket, namely the mātṛkā-piṭaka; second, two baskets, namely the śrāvaka-piṭaka and the bodhisattva-piṭaka; third, three baskets, namely sūtra, abhidharma, and vinaya; fourth, four baskets, with the addition of the miscellaneous basket (saṃyukta-piṭaka); fifth, five baskets, with the addition of the dhāraṇī-mantra-piṭaka. The meanings in the Ekayāna teaching are all entirely different, namely the ten treasures (garbha/kośa): first, the treasure of faith; second, the treasure of morality; third, the treasure of shame; fourth, the treasure of dread of blame; fifth, the treasure of learning; sixth, the treasure of giving; seventh, the treasure of wisdom; eighth, the treasure of right mindfulness; ninth, the treasure of upholding; tenth, the treasure of eloquence. Question: The meaning of the three baskets is fundamentally based on teaching, while the meaning of the ten treasures encompasses both teaching and meaning. Why are the ten treasures explained in contrast to the three baskets? Answer: The Triyāna and Hīnayāna speak based on phenomenal demarcations, where teaching is not the meaning. In the meaning of the Ekayāna, teaching is taken as teaching, and meaning is also taken as teaching. In the meaning of the Triyāna this meaning is already present, so how much more so in the Ekayāna! This meaning is as explained in a separate essay.
