> As for the meaning of approaching with devotion, it also extends across the Triyāna, Hīnayāna, and Ekayāna. In the Hīnayāna, one approaches spiritual friends with devotion to seek liberation for oneself. The Triyāna is for rescuing sentient beings; for the sake of sentient beings, one attains bodhi and reveals dharma-nature. The initial teaching is emptiness; the final teaching is thusness. In the Ekayāna separate teaching, there are ten meanings that constitute the four approaching-with-devotions: 1. one must recognize the spiritual friend; 2. one must recognize what is spoken; 3. one must recognize Māra's deeds; 4. accomplishment of one's own precepts; 5. one must possess vigor; 6. one must revere the spiritual friend; 7. one must give rise to the mind seeking the Dharma; 8. the mind directs toward the true Dharma; 9. accomplishing one's profound mind; 10. attaining clear comprehension of phenomena. Each of these ten gates is fully endowed with ten gates, as expounded in the 'Chapter on Leaving the World.' Why ten gates are spoken of in every case is to correspond to the inexhaustible dharmas of the Ekayāna. The remaining points are as in the separate chapter.
