> In the first \[gate\] there are two: (1) It means that the Tathāgata can expound all distinct phenomena with a single voice: namely, those with much lust hear the Tathāgata expound the contemplation of impurity, and so on up to all things; therefore it is called the round voice. Hence the Avataṃsaka says: "The Tathāgata within a single speech expounds a boundless ocean of sūtras." (2) It means that the single voice of the Tathāgata can identify with all distinct sounds of speech; that is, the various sentient beings each hear the Tathāgata speaking only their own language. Hence the Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: "The linguistic conventions of all sentient beings / Are expounded in a single word without remainder."
