> Second, the function of the dharma-realm completely luminous and unhindered. This is the Avataṃsaka-samādhi. That is, broadly cultivating the myriad practices, according with principle to accomplish virtue, universally encompassing the dharma-realm to realize bodhi. Speaking of the 'flower adornment' (avataṃsaka), flowers have the function of bearing fruit, and practice has the efficacy of inducing retribution. Now, relying on phenomena to express this, flowers are used as an analogy. 'Adornment' means that when practices are accomplished and fruit is perfected, according with principle and matching truth, nature and marks are both forgotten, subject and object are both extinguished, and it shines forth in brilliant clarity; hence it is called adornment. Indeed, unless it is a practice flowing from the real, there is no way to accord with the real; how could any practice that decorates the real not arise from the real! Here, the real encompasses the tips of delusion, and there is no practice that is not cultivated; delusion penetrates to the source of the real, and there is no mark that is not quieted. Hence it is called the function of the dharma-realm completely luminous and unhindered. The Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: 'Adorning and purifying inconceivable lands, / Making offerings to all Tathāgatas, / Emitting great light that is boundless, / Delivering sentient beings without limit, / Giving, morality, patience, vigor, and dhyāna, / Wisdom, skillful means, spiritual powers, and so forth— / All of these are completely unimpeded / Through the power of the Buddha's Avataṃsaka-samādhi.' Based on this meaning, it is called the Avataṃsaka-samādhi.
