> A spear (mao) is a piercing weapon, belonging to the class of lances and halberds. A shield (dun) is an armor shield, a barrier. In the past, someone was selling both, praising the excellence of each of the two items. Praising the shield, he said: 'No spear can pierce it.' Praising the spear, he immediately said: 'It can pierce a ten-layered shield.' A wise person said to him: 'If I buy your spear to pierce your shield, will it pierce it or not?' He had no words in reply.
