> Zhen's Record states: 'Dhāraṇī' means total retention. 'True jewel palace' means the world-ocean. 'Thoroughly sitting on the bed of the middle way of the limit of reality' means thoroughly reaching the ultimate true source of the One Vehicle. Regarding 'from of old unmoving is named Buddha': Question: Why is a sentient being bound by all fetters a buddha from of old? Answer: If the conditions for practice have not yet arisen, they cannot be called a buddha from of old. Why? Because only in the condition of today's generating the mind \[of bodhi\] do all dharmas of the dharmadhātu arise頓. In the condition where wisdom is needed, afflictions and good dharmas also arise as conditions for accomplishing wisdom; in the condition where afflictions are needed, it is also like this; therefore, it is only when the condition of today's generating the mind arises without interruption that one is accomplished from of old. Prior to conditions there is not a single dharma; hence it is not called 'from of old'. In the three vehicles, there is a venerated, fixed origin; hence they discuss it solely by taking the meaning that initial enlightenment is identical to original enlightenment. The One Vehicle is not like this: it has no venerated, fixed origin, and origin and branches are indeterminate; hence, according to what is needed, all attain oneness.
