> First is the teaching of the vehicle of humans and devas. In this there are three \[ways of\] attaining Buddhahood: First, the Buddha, in order to rescue those in the three evil destinies, manifests a body different from those three evil destinies, which is itself the body of attaining Buddhahood, as when the Buddha manifested \[as a being with\] black elephant's legs and so forth. The Silla record says: "The Buddha manifested a body with black elephant's legs; seeing it walk without obstruction alongside the hells, \[the beings\] rejoiced in it and planted wholesome roots." It is on the basis of this meaning that it says, "First, the Buddha, in order to rescue those in the three evil destinies… is itself the body of attaining Buddhahood," and so forth. Second, in order to guide those of the human destiny, he manifests the present Buddha body, as when the Buddha manifested a tree-spirit body for the elder Trapuṣa and others. The record says: "When the Buddha first attained the Way, beneath the tree on the bank of that confluence of rivers, he displayed a sixteen-foot body and manifested a body fully endowed with the marks and signs. The merchants and others, seeing this Buddha body, took it to be a spirit and made offerings to it; they were people of wholesome roots at that time. In order to guide these people, he manifested the body of attaining Buddhahood." Third, to guide humans and devas, he manifests his noble body, and so on, as when the Buddha, being a noble one, caused \[them\] to produce offerings and accomplish worldly merit. The record says: "When the Buddha was beneath the tree, Brahmā knew to make offerings to the Buddha, but the Buddha remained silent for seven days. Brahmā again requested him to preach the Dharma, and so when the Buddha preached the Dharma in the second seven days, many people planted wholesome roots. Therefore it says, 'to guide humans and devas… as people and others know that the Buddha is a noble one,' and so on."
