> Second: various tools for craftsmanship. The root Vinaya states: at that time, an ironsmith left home and wished to make pātras; the Buddha permitted him to make them, \[allowing that\] when needing a hearth, hammer, tongs, bellows, rasps, and piercing tools, he may make a bag to hold them and hang it on a peg. It is also permitted to possess implements for smoking bowls, giving drills and metal plates to those repairing bowls, as well as woodworking implements. For those sewing robes who are troubled by crooked lines, it is permitted to stretch chalk-lines, red earth, marking cords, measuring rules, and the like, making reels to stretch them out.
