> The aforementioned items that are intrinsically heavy in nature are fundamentally the source of defiling entanglements. Examined in terms of practice, they are improper; their manufacture and upkeep entail excessive faults, and in principle they must be prohibited. It is only because people's capacities are weak and inferior, and their minds become obstructed by circumstances, that one accommodates human feelings and provisionally opens an expedient way. The preceding matters are manifold and intricate, and burden the clear spirit: while alive, they sustain personal livelihood, so their use is temporarily permitted; upon death, they are decisively classified into permanent property, cutting off any continuation of previous attachments. Furthermore, there are items for funeral rites and offerings. The requisites for worship and sacrifices are explicitly permitted by the orthodox teaching to repay the virtue of kindness and grace; conforming to life and adapting to secular custom, they serve all the more to manifest the etiquette that quells arrogance. If images and likenesses are not fully established, upon what can veneration rely? If slight offerings are not modestly presented, how can earnest devotion arise? They must decisively be classified as heavy or light as above, and as fully listed below. Therefore, regarding the contents of the first \[category\], rooms and dwellings, the root Vinaya decisively states: if there are many private rooms and items belonging to private rooms—lampstands, beds, and mats—they are all gathered into heavy property. Regarding the second \[category\], tools, the root Vinaya comprehensively lists five kinds: iron, pottery, leather, bamboo, and wood work, as well as axes and chisels, which are all gathered into heavy property. Regarding the third \[category\], vessels and utensils, the root Vinaya comprehensively determines that tubs, jars, and washing basins are heavy articles and all fall under the restriction of heavy property; not having differentiated sizes and quantities, one may follow the Sarvāstivāda \[standard\] that those of two dou or more enter heavy property. The merits and faults of dou measurements have been broadly described above. Regarding the fourth \[category\], articles assisting the body, the root Vinaya only has carriages, sedan chairs, staffs, and fans entering heavy property, leaving the rest completely undiscussed; this is merely an omission of brevity, and by principle they should be illustrated by analogy, all being resolved as above. Regarding the fifth \[category\], articles for shrines and offerings, since they belong to another, they are not for private use, and are returned to their original place; if one made them oneself intended for after death, they may be gathered into heavy property. Outside of these, wherever the text is not exhaustive, one should examine the principles above and below by analogy.
