> Furthermore, according to the Sūtra of the Buddha Meeting King Bimbisāra: “The Tathāgata achieved awakening at Mount Gayā, and after converting Kāśyapa, remembered that King Bimbisāra had formerly made an earlier invitation, and led his assembly of disciples to set out for that kingdom. When the king, his gentlemen, and the śramaṇas (also called sangmen or shamenna, which are all fine titles for Daoist-ascetics in India and ordinary designations in worldly usage; they also refer to practitioners of pure conduct in that country, translated here as ‘pure-willed’, designating them by their meaning) first heard that the Buddha had arrived, all went far out to welcome him. Not knowing how to show etiquette and reverence, some bowed at his feet and sat down, some raised their hands to inquire after him and sat down, some announced their names, some crossed their hands and joined their palms, and some sat in silence. All doubted whether Kāśyapa was the long-standing former master and now, having come following the Buddha, did not know who was the one relied upon. Kāśyapa, knowing this and wishing to resolve the assembly's doubts, ascended into the sky and came down, bowed reverently at the Buddha's feet, stroked them with his hands, kissed them with his mouth, and said himself: ‘The Buddha is my master, and I am the Buddha's disciple.’ He also held a fan and fanned behind the Buddha.”
