> The answer states: "Now, the noble path is distant and difficult to aspire to, while the pure mind is close and easy to be confused about. Building a mountain begins with a single basketful of earth; becoming a Buddha arises from the initial thought. Therefore, accomplishing a journey of ten thousand li cannot be mounted without the first step; the merit of three kalpas cannot be achieved without the initial mind. Thus we know that when a practitioner sets out, they constantly tread this mind; revelation does not come from the outside, and realization indeed arises from within. When confused, one thinks one is bowing to external objects; once awakened, one returns to bowing to one's own mind. Therefore a sūtra says: 'When the mind envisions the Buddha, this mind is the Buddha.' Focusing one's thoughts like this, one will surely be diligent; accumulating perfuming unceasingly, it will naturally become pure. Forgetting this and seeking outside, only then undertaking the practice of the path, merely toils the body and mind and ultimately amounts to worldly blessing. Therefore Śāriputra, failing to reflect, dwelt in regression and forgetfulness for kalpas; while Nanda, composing his thoughts, liberated his spirit within a single morning." The above clarifies the Three Jewels of the single essence.
