> "Third, regarding 'relying on wisdom and not on consciousness': Consciousness refers to the active mental functioning that follows sensory dust in differentiated seeing—eyes to forms and ears to sounds, indulging and infatuated without awareness, on par with oxen and sheep, moving together with the deviant and ordinary. The Great Sage demonstrated in his teachings that sensory objects are one's own mind, yet the lowest fools obstinately hold fast, taking the dust to be external to consciousness. For this reason, in guiding and converting them, there is no way to abandon it. Thus we know that clinging and falling back belongs to ordinary consciousness, while turning upside down to send forth belongs to the sage's mind. Stumbling through foolish delusions, one constantly sinks into the three inversions; yet if one exerts vigorous striving with special penetration, knowing the moment a thought stirs, knowing that inversions are difficult to purify—this is called relying on consciousness. Knowing that the flow must be reversed is called wisdom according to one's measure. Applying effort in this manner, clarity and greatness gradually increase. Later, when seeing dust-objects, one knows they do not come from outside; objects are not outside the mind, but are the marks of one's own mind. How could there be foolish delusion generating hatred and generating love? Incessantly examining and selecting, one's understanding differs from that of oxen and sheep.
