> The Treatise on Arousing the Bodhicitta states: 'There are ten great correct vows that one should constantly resolve to practice: First, I vow that the roots of virtue planted by me in past lives and in this present life be bestowed upon sentient beings and dedicated toward the Buddha path, causing this vow of mine to grow from thought to thought, never to be forgotten in life after life, and guarded by dhāraṇīs; second, I vow that through these roots of virtue I will encounter Buddhas in my places of rebirth, constantly able to make offerings, and not be born in lands without Buddhas; third, I vow that I will draw near to all Buddhas and attend upon them, like a shadow following a form, and having drawn near, they will explain the Dharma for me, accomplishing the five superknowledges; fourth, I vow to penetrate conventional truth, propagate conventional names, understand the supreme truth, and attain the wisdom of the true Dharma; fifth, I vow to preach for sentient beings with an untiring mind, instructing, encouraging, benefiting, and delighting them, causing all to awaken and understand; sixth, I vow by the Buddha's spiritual power to reach all worlds in the ten directions, make offerings to all Buddhas, hear and receive the true Dharma, and broadly gather sentient beings; seventh, I vow to accord with the pure wheel of the Dharma, so that all sentient beings who hear my Dharma or hear my name will immediately be able to cast off all defilements; eighth, I vow to follow sentient beings to protect them and give them joy, abandoning body, life, and wealth, taking upon myself the burden of the true Dharma, eliminating all that is unprofitable; ninth, I vow that although I practice the true Dharma, my mind will have nothing it practices and nothing it does not practice, not abandoning the correct vow for the sake of transforming sentient beings; tenth, I vow that these ten great vows of mine will pervade the realm of sentient beings and embrace all vows numerous as the sands of the Ganges. If the realm of sentient beings has an end, my vows will then have an end; however, because the realm of sentient beings cannot be exhausted, these great vows of mine also cannot be exhausted.'
