> I fully heard the refined discourse and the constitutional statutes of former eras; these are indeed what the entire dispensation venerates, the grand track of the Tripiṭaka. If one obstinately clings to rigid views and abruptly rejects them, never having heard anything of them, how would that differ from when the assembly permanently permitted the circumstances of the eight things, failing to comply with the Sthaviras' reconvened assembly? Even without this explanation, one might perhaps extend it in sentiment. In the Mahīśāsaka Vinaya: 'If in other regions it is not considered pure, then even though it was instituted, it is not to be practiced.' Relying on this, one can have a standard to follow; how much more so when devas deign to descend, fully bringing together the dispensations and prohibitions—I only regret having learned of it so late! Yet regarding the present teachings, matters are akin to lost texts; I look up to them and believe in them, also rejoicing like the punishment meted out to Kāśyapa. And so on.
