> "Your disciple's surname is Wang, and his name is Fan, an official of the Orchid Platform of the Great Wu. When Master \[Kang\] Senghui first arrived in Jianye, Lord Sun did not at first grant him permission, commanding him to bring about a rare auspicious sign before he would establish an extraordinary monastery for him. At that time, the spirits of heaven and earth all bestowed spiritual aid, and on the twenty-first day, they finally moved the śarīra to appear. The Lord of Wu held a bronze vessel in his hand and poured \[the relic\] into a bronze basin. Where the śarīra struck, the basin immediately cracked and broke; even when tested by burning with fire and striking with a hammer, it could not be damaged. The likes of Kan Ze and Zhang Yu were also aided and protected by devas, who entered into their bodies, making their spirits bright, penetrating, and agile, so that their replies were harmonious and apt. Now they are all in heaven, taking the propagation and protection of the Buddha-Dharma as their task. Your disciple is an emissary under General Wei of the Southern Heaven. The General's affairs are extremely numerous: he protects the Buddha-Dharma of the three continents, and whenever there are disputes or situations of oppression and danger, he never fails to go in person to reconcile and instruct them, bringing about resolution. Now, conveying greetings, he wished to come before you immediately; but his duties detained him. He will arrive before long, and meanwhile ordered your disciples and others to converse and discuss with the Master."
