> To the left of the east gate of the central courtyard, it is divided into five courtyards. South of the south-end alley it is further divided into two courtyards: the western is called the Vinaya-Observance \[Courtyard\], and the eastern is named the Ordination Platform \[Courtyard\]. The three gates of the Vinaya Courtyard are never left unopened; in the center is a great hall where Vinaya masters of the Vinaya school mostly gather and dwell. Surrounding the middle rooms are three circuits, where the Vinaya-observing assembly receives instruction. There is a bronze bell weighing thirty thousand catties, made jointly by the Four Heavenly Kings. When wishing to assemble the holy multitude of the trichiliocosm, Maudgalyāyana struck it with his supernatural power. The tower is seventy feet high, and the bell is shaped like those of the land of Han; on its four sides are mostly images of the sun, moon, stars, constellations, mountains, streams, rivers, and oceans, as well as images of dry measures, balances, and rulers; the four assemblies constantly gather. When struck by ordinary monks, it is also heard throughout the three thousand realms. However, when struck by Maudgalyāyana, according to the matter at hand, comprehension arose immediately; when struck by ordinary men, it merely produced sound.
