> In this degenerate age, students of the vinaya run completely counter to the holy words: in winter they wear damask and silk gauze, and in summer they rely on fine crêpe and light gauze. Regarding colors that confound genuine vermilion, they never tire of fresh brilliance; in illegal dimensions, their robes hang low past the thighs and knees. Moreover, delighting in colorful robes themselves, they falsely claim it is by imperial decree; although they claim to disguise their faults, it deeply constitutes slandering the Dharma. As the ancestral master said: 'How could they fear not having a share in the evil destinies? How lamentable!' (The statement in the Sarvāstivāda-vinayavibhāṣā that 'violating a king's order incurs a duṣkṛta' refers merely to violating state prohibitions.)
