> All three robes must be cut and pieced together. If cloth is scarce and difficult to procure, then applying patch-leaves is permitted. For the five-strip robe alone, folded leaves are also permitted. In the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya: "If the great robe is not completed in five days, it constitutes a naisargika or saṅghāvaśeṣa." (According to the Vinaya: "Four days for the seven-strip robe, and two days for the five-strip robe.") The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya: "It must be back-stitched, not sewn straight." Four finger-breadths from the front border, attach the loop (pronounced xian, meaning hook). Eight finger-breadths from the rear border, attach the strap. Nowadays, when letting it hang on the arm, having eight in front and four in back is completely inverted.
