> If considered in terms of wrongly clinging to the Buddha's teaching, based on the four gates of the Tripiṭaka teaching, one gate has three: first, directly generating understanding of the principle, so that the nature of wisdom gives rise to a view; second, attaining various supernormal powers; third, understanding the texts of the four Āgamas. In this way, across the four gates there are twelve different kinds of attainments. If one grasps the intent, at the beginning in each gate there are three kinds of smṛtyupasthāna: first, intrinsic nature smṛtyupasthāna; second, shared smṛtyupasthāna; third, conditioned smṛtyupasthāna. "Intrinsic nature" is directly taking the principle of truth as condition; "shared" is the joint cultivation of phenomena and principle; "conditioned" is universally taking all objective realms and phenomena as conditions, and is also taking the doctrinal teachings of the Tripiṭaka as conditions. Later, when verifying the fruit, one accomplishes three kinds of liberation: wisdom-liberation, dual liberation, and doubt-free liberation. Therefore, when compiling the Dharma treasury, one thousand persons were selected, all possessing doubt-free liberation, who universally understood internal and external scriptures and treatises to subdue external opponents. The Abhidharma-vibhāṣā says: "Liberation from the obstacle of afflictions, liberation from the obstacle of dhyāna-concentration, and liberation from the obstacle of all phenomena." A person of wisdom-liberation attains the first liberation; a person of dual liberation attains the second liberation; only a Buddha attains the third liberation, collectively named "doubt-free liberation." For those who cling to the four gates of the shared, distinctive, and perfect teachings of the Mahāyāna and lose their intent, by analogy there are thirty-six different kinds of attainments.
