> Blind and unseeing, they say they have attained the true path, or say they have attained dhāraṇī. Dim in discerning people, they place themselves high in rank. At times, not believing them, others repudiate them as mad and deluded. I now say they are neither mad nor sage. When someone is possessed by a ghost, they can speak, but when the ghost departs, they become dull; since this is not the case here, we know they are not mad. Searching into their old delusions, greed and anger are still present; examining their new delusions, afflictions have increased further, and the eighty-eight anusayas bind them vastly—hence we know they are not sages. It is simply that the wisdom of views has arisen. Broadly speaking, the arising of views occurs through hearing or through dhyāna, but mostly through dhyāna. Either views arise after dhyāna, or dhyāna and views arise together; cases where dhyāna is attained after views are rare, while the other two meanings are frequent. For example, all dhyānas generally give rise to the outflow-free, yet those arising from the not-yet-arrived \[dhyāna\] are few, while those arising from the six stages or nine stages are many. For this reason, following the realm of dhyāna-samādhi, the various views are discussed.
