- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [2.21](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1911.2.21)

> Like dreaming of seeing the seven jewels and the joy of relatives; upon waking, one reflects upon them, not knowing where they are. In this way contemplate the Buddha. Furthermore, like a woman in Śrāvastī named Xumen: hearing of her, a man rejoiced in heart and in a night dream had relations with her; upon waking, he reflected on it: "She did not come, and I did not go, yet the pleasurable affair was vivid." One should contemplate the Buddha like this. Like a person traveling through a great swamp, hungry and thirsty, dreaming of obtaining fine food; upon waking, his belly is empty, and he reflects to himself that all existing phenomena are like a dream. One should contemplate the Buddha like this. Contemplate frequently and do not rest; with this contemplation, one shall be born in the land of Amitābha Buddha. This is called "contemplation according to characteristics." Like a person placing a jewel upon lapis lazuli, its reflection appears within it. Also like a monk contemplating bones: the bones emit various lights; no one brings this here, nor are there these bones—it is merely created by the mind. Like an image in a mirror, neither coming from outside nor produced within: because the mirror is clean, one sees one's own form. When the practitioner's form is pure, all that exists is pure; if he wishes to see the Buddha, he immediately sees the Buddha; seeing, he inquires; inquiring, he is answered; hearing the sūtra, he greatly rejoices (number two).
