- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [3.214](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1911.3.214)

> Chapter Nine says: "Sentient beings are like a newly calved cow whose milk and blood are not yet distinguished; śrāvakas are like milk; pratyekabuddhas are like curd; bodhisattvas are like fresh and clarified butter; Buddhas are like ghee." Is this analogy not the meaning of the five flavors of the distinctive teaching? The beginning and middle of the ten abodes, being able to exhaust the common delusions of view and thought, are called milk, generally likened to śrāvakas. The final mind of the ten abodes is slightly deeper, so it is likened to pratyekabuddhas as curd. The ten practices and ten dedications are like fresh and clarified butter. The beginning of the ten grounds is already named Buddha, and is therefore like ghee. Borrowing this brings to light and establishes the meaning of gradual and perfect within the division of the distinctive contemplation.
