- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [3.40](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1911.3.40)

> If for an ordinary person, what is cured by goodness through cessation is the characteristic of calming; what is produced by goodness through action is the characteristic of contemplation. Furthermore, the four dhyānas and the four immeasurables are the characteristics of calming; the six practices are the characteristics of contemplation. These all fail to escape birth and death, and thus take the defiled as their characteristic. Therefore the Great Treatise says: 'Except for Mount Malaya, nowhere else produces sandalwood; except for the wisdom of the three vehicles, nowhere else has true wisdom.' Hence these are not what is discussed now.
