> Second, the reproof of the five desires: namely forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tangible objects. The \*Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā\* says: "Restraining the six sense faculties is like tethering a dog, a deer, a fish, a snake, a monkey, and a bird. A dog delights in villages, a deer delights in mountains and marshes, a fish delights in ponds, a snake delights in living in holes, a monkey delights in deep forests, and a bird delights in relying on the open air. The six faculties delight in the six sense objects; they cannot be subdued by the shallow wisdom and weak resolve of ordinary beings. Only with wisdom, a firm mind, and right mindfulness can they be subdued." This is a general metaphor for the six faculties. Now, my personal correlation is: the eye craves forms, and forms have material substance, like a village; the eye is like a dog. The ear craves sounds, and sounds have no material substance, like an open marsh; the ear is like a deer. The nose craves smells, like a fish. The tongue is drawn to tastes, like a snake. The body clings to tangibles, like a monkey. The mind takes dharmas as objects, like a bird.
